Hi there,

I am planning on laying some slabs in my back garden, and also in my front garden. Currently the place where I want the slabs to be laid is flat, and covered in gravel.

The area that needs to be covered is 47m2. A quote I have been given by a builder stated that I need 5 bags of sharp sand, 5 bags of mot, and 15 25kg bags of cement.

My questions are

1. Can I place the the slabs directly on top of the gravel (quartz pea gravel 10mm)

2. Do the amounts suggested for materials above (excluding the paving slabs) seem reasonable?

3. Can I use builders sand instead of sharp sand for laying patio slabs? My local B&Q is out of sharp sand

You can't place them on the gravel as it is not a stable base.
As for the other 2 questions I don't know what the answers are, sorry.
