Hi there,

First time post as hoping for a quality opinion. Excuse any errors as I don’t know much about patios.

We have just had a new patio fitted and waited the time suggested by the guys who fitted it for the mortar to dry.. at the moment no pointing has been put between the slabs. They are just sitting on the mortar bed/base which has dried hard.

When we walk over it for the first time we notice loose slabs that rock and are completely loose. The mortar has not bonded to them at all in any place and you can just lift them up. There are 16 slabs like this in a section of about 70 slabs.

Upon lifting the slabs you can see they were only in contact with the base about 20% of the area.. and are very damp. pictures attached.

Also the gaps between the slabs are very inconsistent. 5mm at places up to 30mm.. the slabs are cut limestone and I’ve measured them and they seem spot on same dimensions across the board. Pics attached.

We have had a second opinion who suggested the whole patio needs pulling up.. the slabs cleaned of any mortar that has stuck, and the bed doing again and it all relaying. But I am thinking our fitter wants to repair the loose slabs..

The other opinion is that to have 16 loose slabs something is wrong with the mixture/bonding and the whole patio is not done properly.

Any opinions welcome.

What a shame! That looks like some of the poorest paving workmanship I've seen :( Whole lot needs to come up I'm afraid IMHO, and be done properly.

Should have used a slurry primer on the back of the stones and be fully bedded. Joint spacing is terrible and paving doesn't even look flat. Bedding mix looks a bit lean to me and not fully mixed.

Have a look at the paving suppliers instructions for how it should have been done.
