Patterned window screen/trellis/lattice work

As the post title suggests half my problem is I dont know the correct word for the woodwork I want to learn how to do so if anyone can name this art and/or point me in right direction of any resources I'd be grateful.

Basically I've fallen in love with the light patterns produced by window screens in some countries. I think I have enough know how/patience to make a simple screen such as:

But I'd love to know how the joinery and planning is done on more and slowly learn to make something like:

I realise with modern materials a design could be drawn onto MDF and cut out, but I think that would be cheating and poorer quality.

Anyone have any experience/pointers here?

Many are cut by hand from a single panel, takes years as an apprentice before you would be allowed even to attempt anything like that.

One panel was my first thought as well but its too big to come from one panel and too delicate as well, you'd end up with all end grain in some places and then these wouldnt last long as outside pieces as the wood swells etc.

I really should have examined close when I was over there oh well.

As for complexity they didnt have dremels when these were originally made, so I reckon with patience, a dremel and precise mitre saw its doable. But I'm not sure of the best way to do the joints and whether glue alone would work...
