i want to build a fairly chunky pergola (using 6" fence posts as the uprights) on a small 3m x 3m porcelain patio (20mm pavers on full wet bed. I dont want to drill into them though.

If I build the pergola on the patio, assuming its weight will keep it from moving anywhere (total will be 4 x 6" 2.5m fence posts and 12 x 6x2" c16 for the rafters), should i sit the 4 corner posts directly onto the patio, or place something between them to protect the surface?

Could you build the thing with it's legs inside something like a barrel half or similar tub? That way a bit of concrete or soil would stop it shifting.
It may be a simple wooden structure butt add in a canvas sail against the sun, or some foliage and it could still move if windy
