I have a Baxi Bermuda back boiler (the type with a gas fire on the front). I turned off the gas supply to the house when we went on holiday and now I can't get the pilot light to come on. I press the big grey button almost in line with the pilot light (at the front of the controls) and at the same time repeatedly press the small ignition button on the gas valve. I can see a spark but there's no ignition. Am I doing something wrong? I can smell gas when I've done this a few times (yes, I do then wait for a while before trying again!) so I know there's gas getting to the boiler. Any suggestions before I call an engineer?

the spark you see may be the electrode arking to the wrong place or the electrode broken.

keep the grey button held in and keep pressing rapidly for about 50 times seriously

if it catches the pilot light keep the button held in for a further 20 sec and let it out slowly

failling that you could light it with a taper but be carefull

Could also be that the ignition unit or the thermocouple are dead. If you combine the repair with a service, it will cost you very little to get it properly sorted.

Probably just a partially choked pilot, these can hold if small when the flame is on,but as soon as it`s turned off almost impossible to relight.
As suggested get it serviced and checked out.
