Over the last couple of years our garden has been boxed in by large (permitted) extensions built by our neighbours, who have proved difficult to deal with.

As their external walls are unsightly and now form the boundary we'd like to grow plants against them. I've been told we can fix trellis to their wall for creepers etc, but someone has also suggested turning it into a "green wall" and I was wondering what we're allowed to do without seeking permission.

Are the walls entirely on your neighbour's land abutted to the boundary? If so, you cannot fix anything to their walls, nor paint them, lean or pile anything against them. If you already have a difficult relationship with them, damaging their walls is not going to help.

If you want to have a trellis attach it to posts in your own land.

Who told you you can fix trellis too it? you certainly can't unless they clearly give full permission.

You absolutely can't hang a heavy and moisture retaining structure like a green wall on someone elses house wall.

Even with their full permission it would be a bad idea.

With permission to attach trellis a non vigorous climber that does not stick to the wall may be ok like a pyracantha, climbing hydrangea etc. but any form of ivy or viginia creeper etc should probably be avioded.
