Hello, we had damp in our first floor bedroom of 1930s house - it was single brick with paonted pebble dash render and looks like rain and moisture got in through cracks on the outside

We've since had whole house decked with external insulation and silicone render

What is the procedure to repair the internal wall where the plaster has blown? A company has quoted us a low amount to fix but their suggestion is only to remove the paint, seal with damp proof paint and then repaint after that

Surely this isn't enough? Am I right in saying it needs to be taken back to brick and then plastered?

Thanks

Remove all the loose plaster and reskim .
Not necessarily back to brick , depends how bad it is .
If it’s loose back to the brickwork come back.
The builders suggestion is daft.

Thanks, we thought so - will query with them. How messy will the job be? We are going to clear the room but there's some bits we can't move and we have a 9 month old who sleeps in the room next door - is there likely to be lots of dust?

cover all the carpets

yes

the dust will be terrible

remove all furnishings, including lamp shades. Empty all drawers andcupboards and take the contents out of the room.

if you get a builders canister vac, you can get an extended 2" hose. Put the vac outside with the hose entering the room through a window. Block the window with a piece of hardboard or something with a hole to fit the hose

the vac will create suction that prevents dust drifting into the rest of the house, and as the exhaust of the vac is not in the room, it will not set up ait currents to blow the dust around.

i have seen 5metre hoses, there might be a longer one.

If you are fond of tinkering you can use plastic waste pipe hose

sweep and vac theroom several times before you open the door.

there will be dust on everything, including the tops of architrave and doors, and stuck to the walls, and in crevices, such as under the skirting.

any carpets will be fit for the skip

after vac cleaning, damp sponge several times until the sponge comes away clean.

If you are still there OP then why not show pics of the wall or walls with blown plaster?
Has the new work been tested by exposure to the rain for any length of time?
Are the walls in question solid or cavity? If cavity then do you have CWI?
