Hello

I have two rooms in my loft that need plastering. The spaces have two oversized south facing roof windows, and when the sun is out, the spaces can get uncomfortably hot.

I'm concerned that when I have plastered, the excessive heat may affect the drying process leading to mm ore than usual cracking.

Am I being unnecessarily over concerned?

Or if there is a problem, are there any steps I can ask the plasterer to take to end up with the best finish possible?

Thanks..

Direct sunlight onto wet plaster is not good. If plaster dries out before it has gone through the setting process, it is useless. If i'm in a room where direct sunlight is shining onto the new wet plaster, i'll put a sheet over the window. Once the plaster has set/gone off, it'not so critical. It's hard work plastering in a warm room, but if the job has beem properly prepped and all joints/cracks etc taped, it shouldn't be a problem. Plaster should always dry out slowly/naturally if possible, but in warm conditions, you can't help it drying quicker. As i said, keep direct sunlight off of it if you can. The same applies to wet render, concrete etc.

As RC says

Why not time the work to avoid the worst heat , or at least before or after the sun is on it?

Make sure you are not tempted to open a window no matter how hot it gets , ideally until the next day as a breeze plus heat are a deadly combination.

Micilin is right about keeping the windows shut. Sometimes, the customer thinks i'm mad because i wont open the windows, until i tell them the reason why. A very warm humid room is deal for growihg cucumbers in, but it's hard going for the plasterer.
