I am about to put a downlight close to a plastic pushfit connetor, it will be about 50mm away. could damage or melt it? one idea is to put tin foil between them to act as a barrier and reflect the heat back.

Its abit of a werid set up, theres a T piece further down the line which goes into a joist, so will not move.
So your worryed that it might damage it? if so i will change it, dont want to risk it.
