i am in need of a little help.i have plastic switches at the moment fitted flush in plasterboard with plastic boxes fitted behind.do i need to replace the plastic boxes behind with metal ones in order to earth out the chrome switches.as you can see i'm a beginner with all this house hold stuff so thanks for all your help.

no you dont, the plastic back boxes are designed not to fall in in plater board walls, the metal ones will.

you must how ever connect the earth wire in the cable to the earth terminal on the back of the new switch.

you should also test is what appears to be an earth wire really an earth wire with a multi meter
