I am told by someone that the poly tiles I have on my bathroom ceiling are a "fire hazard." What's the truth?

then you`re flocked . Get those tiles off asap 
The tiles are resistant to any kind of heat so melt.. and drip on people trying to escape the burning blaze..
Although it must be said that escaping from a burning blaze in a bathroom is not that common! 
So you have never had a really really long "think" in the bathroom.. or fallen asleep in the bath... or fallen asleep on the bathroom floor while hugging the magic white telephone to god, after a bottle of sambuca..Although it must be said that escaping from a burning blaze in a bathroom is not that common!
Surely the dripping polystyrene would add to the experience? A bit like dripping wax!

Nope, probably that i often get distract.. ed.. mid sentence and then come back 5-10mins later so can miss the odd letter/wordis there a sense of irony in that statement /your signature @ the bottom
