I intend to install a double socket at the hatchway in my attic. There is a single socket directly below the hatch in the hallway. Can I just place the new socket wires directly into the existising socket for it to function properly/safely. Thanks in advance-UK-

There are a lot of "if's" to satisfy before you can do that. Would it not be easier just to place a double extension lead in the loft and plug it into the socket as and when you need it?

Thanks for the reply AttM. Yeah that is what I am doing just now but the cable dangling down somewhat annoys me. I dont like the sound of "if's" so I might scrap the original idea. Would forgeting about the sockets and tapping into the upstairs lighting circuit be a better option and just add a switch and a light, or is this just as complicated??

Adding an extra light to the upstairs circuit would be simpler, it depends how old your installation is. If it's relatively new then you should be able to go to the last light in the circuit and just continue it, or come from the nearest ceiling rose, with live, neutral and earth to your switch.

Great, thanks alot for that link breezer, it confirms what i suspected but i feel a heck of alot better knowing for sure, the diagrams were spot on

the house was built in 98 so is a new installation. I havent yet been up in the loft to view the wiring arrangements, but am i right in thinking the last light in the circuit would be the rose that has just the one wire going into it? (im assuming the rest will have two)

The last ceiling rose will have two cables, one being mains in (from previous rose), the other being for the light switch, the previous ones will have three cables, mains in, mains out (to next rose) and a cable to the switch
