preparing a varnished door for paint.

hello all would like some advice on what preparation is required to change the look on a front door,the door and frame are both finished with stain/varnish,i would like to paint them is just a case of rub down undercoat then gloss or is their more to it ,thanks in advance

That sounds good to me!

Wash down, give it a good rub down making sure you get into the moulded parts, dust off, apply one coat of melamine primer or similar, fill, rub down, apply one coat of undercoat and two coats of gloss

Stand back....and admire!
