I want to repaint a door frame without removing the old paint, some of whch is flaking but this can be removed without exposing the wood.
This will obviously leave an uneven surface, even after smoothing edges with sandpaper.
Is there any filler type product that can be applied to restore a smooth surface prior to painting?
Any tips gratefully received.

This will stop the paint flaking http://zinsseruk.com/shop/Product.aspx?cId=130&pgId=360 but to get a decent, smooth and level surface you should really strip the paint and start again.

If you don't want to do that you can use an exterior grade fine surface filler to level out the damaged paint, do a lot of sanding and use a good quality 'levelling' primer before applying your topcoat/s. http://zinsseruk.com/shop/Product.aspx?cId=130&pgId=355

There are other brands of this type of product available, but Zinsser's are generally regarded as the best.
