Looking through many magazines etc, the time to prune plumb/apple trees get confusing. The plumb tree is a victoria the apple is a John Downey? The plumb is a small but established tree the apple is fairly young. I normally prune late autumn which doesn't seem to effect the trees but would like suggestions. Also I noticed that the plumb tree had very small perforations and discoloured leaves this year but didn't effect the fruit yield

Hi Gydn,
'John Downie' is a crab apple. Unlike edible apples crabs it should'nt be pruned hard otherwise you get lots of upright shoots appearing in the middle of the tree. You can cut these off but leave the main shoots alone.
The fruits make very good jelly or wine so i've read. Plums should be pruned in summer or early autumn. Sounds daft, but they are more likely to succumb to deseases if its done in the winter.
