When the HW has got to temperature and the motorised valve closes the pump keeps running even if you switch the power off and wait then turn power back on. Have even turned hot water off and turned heating down so that it doesn't ask the boiler to switch on.
It is HW and CH controlled by 2 motorised valves with water tank.

Probably the micro switch on one of the zone valves ,when it closes it should break and that turned off the power to pump / boiler.try disconnecting the orange wire after powering off.

And when pump stays on do you notice that the boiler fires up occasionally for a short spell

Boiler is an ideal classic not noticed if boiler strikes up occasionally

Ideal classic doesn't have pump over run so fault is in one of your motorised valves microswitch sticking

Looks like a valve end switch but why does the boiler stop but not the circ pump?. or is the burner just stopped firing because the setpoint flowtemp has been reached?

Yep blr reaches temp within seconds with valves shut so will o ly fire for very short periods occasionally
