hi is it feasible to lower the upper purlin by a few feet, my loft has had some issues with woodworm, it has all been treated but we are now thinking about replacing the purlins as they are a bit ropey and then do a loft conversion, but still in the thought process and need the answer before we spend £450 for building regs to tell us we cant move them, if we cant put a new one in lower down before we remove the original then i can start to think about the conversion properly,

It is unlikely you will be able to move the purlins without upgrading your rafters, which you will almost certainly have to do anyway for insulation.

ok great, so when i upgrade the rafters say to 6x2 would it then be possible to move it with support's off the steel's for the floor?

You are better checking with your building inspector because he is the one to satisfy, but when the weight is of the roof is the time to reposition your beams.
