Basic question. Just moved and some of my rads have attached. The drain uses a square head bleed key.

Q: Does this bleed the rad or the pipework to the rad (or both if I fully open the valve) and is there a tool you can get to stop you loosening it and losing water before you can put a hose on it?

You turn the white valve head clockwise To close it fully. Then remove the little square shaped spindle and secure a hose .If you then open the valve it will drain both that rad and system.

I have these similar looking square peg valves, but on the radiator connecting side. How do these work?

There is a small ,square ended , shaft up inside the part where a hose would be attached. You use a radiator bleed valve key to unscrew it and remove it. Turning off both radiator valves before you do .

Looks like a Myson Matchmate, and if it is, turning that head will not turn it off.
