lots of gurgling noises from rads, so ive tried bleeding them.
downstairs rads bleed ok, they are now hot, but when bleeding upstairs air escapes for a few seconds the stops. ive also unscrewed the long bent pipe that sticks up on it`s own near the pump, nothing comes out of that either. any ideas?

Assuming you have an 'open-top' system (ie. small feed & expansion tank in loft), are you bleeding it with CH and HW OFF? You must.
If so, possibly there's a problem with the cold feed into the system. Check F&E tank actually has water in it and then work downwards! Hint: favourite place for blockage on a 'standard' layout with the pump in a first floor airing cupboard beside the HW cylinder is just above the pump where the cold feed joins into the pipe leading to the inlet side of the pump. It's messy / tricky clearing such a blockage (often easiest to cut out and replace pipe) - so maybe Get Someone In.
