Ravenheat combi - no hot water when heating is off

Hi,

Wondering if anyone out there can help me.

I have a Ravenheat RSF 820/20. The problem is related to the hot water supply. Hot water from the kitchen tap is fine but needs a strong flow before the boiler flicks on. The shower is fine. however, the bathroom taps don't seem to ever get very hot and rarely flick the switch on. Whilst the central heating is on all the radiators are hot and hot water comes out the taps and continues to be hot for a while after switching the heating off.

I've learnt that this might be a problem with the diverter valve or possibly just the diaphragm. Any thoughts? How much might replacing these parts cost?

It may be unrelated but recently i had a fill loop replaced to top up the pressure to about 1.4 (cold), and over 5 weeks it's dropped again to 0.5 (cold), although with heating on it still gets up to nearly 1.5. Also for information I live in a soft water area so hopefully not limescale build up.

Your suspicions are correct, diverter valve/diaphragm problem.

I would stick the whole valve on.

Be warned, its a right pig of a job on the boiler.

That's the thing though you can't (they have no one available) unless your prepared to go on the homeserve contract with supplement.i.e.£27 per month.

I think i might try british gas, they gave me a home care cover quote, which would include fixing this problem for free, of 28 pounds per month including central heating cover. Otherwise its 156 for a one off repair charge including parts and labour. Npower have a similar one-off charge of 195 including parts (up to 600 pounds) and labour. The philosophy seems to be that some repairs they profit. some they lose out.

This does not sound too bad if they will fix the problem for free. If you were to pay 200 quid to someone else you would then have to pay 28 quid a month for homecare cover(if you wanted it ofcourse) where as with bg you willl get the problem fixed and homecare for the year would work out to be only 11 quid a month for any other problems that might happen.

Therefore spoke to BG who offered to repair the boiler for £159 irrespective of the fault(s) found. They also offered to do the work for £99 if I took out a 12 month Homecare plan at £20 a month, which would include a full service (boiler vever been serviced in 6 years). I took them up on the £99 offer, great value, and 12 months cover for £20 / month. Work done the same day of call out!.

Unfortunately local plumbers are getting greedy. The chap who quoted £400 could have walked to my house in less than a minute.

Your boiler is not very easy to work on compared with the one you linked to. You end up with scraped knuckles! The last one I did one of the connections would not come off and I had to take the part back to base to undo with heat in the vice.

As most are getting rather old now, I would offer a repair at £126 or a replacement whole valve at about £185, both to include a service.

But the boiler is getting rather old now and is ripe for replacement.
