Hi we have just moved into a house and have this boiler, it looks pretty old, but we ar told it works fine, and a plumber has done a safety check on it before we moved in. However, the water that comes out of the taps is scalding hot, so hot its difficult having a shower, even when the shower is turned down to the cold setting. The water seems to be turned down to the thinnest setting on the dial (ie its a round knob, with a curve round it going from thin to thick - i assume thick is on hotter than thin!) so I assume we have it set to the min temp. Its still way too hot. Can anyone help me I know nothing about boilers, so would like to know what it sounds like the problem is, whether there is anything I can do about it myself, any other info I need to tell a plumber.... etc any help much appreciated.!!!

It sounds as if the temperature sensing and control circuit is not operating correctly.

That may be as a result of a failure or just being way out of adjustment.

It will need a competent boiler engineer who is specialising in boiler repairs.

Although still quite repairable this boiler is getting rather old now so you should start thinking about replacement within the next few years.

How fast is the water flow from the hot taps? If less than 9litres/min could be a blockage so water is staying too long in the boiler therefore coming out too hot.

I had a similar problem with a similar boiler. It turned out that the DHW thermistor was not connected to the PCB - somewhere in-between there was a break in the cable, and/or a poor connection.

If you turn the DHW potentiometer (the control you referred to) up and down, you should see the flames change in size (and the water temperature will change). Move the wiring/connectors, and see if there is any difference.

Alternatively, the min/max gas pressure may be set wrong on the gas valve. This should be checked by a competent person.
