hi, i was changing some socket fronts in a living then noticed that the RCD side of the split load fuse board had tripped when i got to changing the ones in the kitchen.... i tried resetting the rcd but it wouldnt, i then swithced all the mcbs off and tried the rcd by itself it still wouldnt reset... has anyone got any other symptoms???? i checked the sockets that i'd changed and couldn't notice any problems with the cables... there was a plumber at the house earlier that had drained the rads down, i noticed that there was some water on the floor not sure whether this would cause this problem though.....

N-E fault, depending on supply type can cause this, will it reset if you turn off the main switch? It is possible you have put a N-E fault on the socket circuit.

It is most likely that a N-E fault was caused by your replacement of the sockets either through you damaging a cable or through disturbing existing damage.

Turning off a MCB WILL NOT isolate the circuits neutral and therefore WILL NOT stop a circuit with a N-E fault from tripping the RCD.

remove every socket you have changed, straighten all the wires and inspect them carefully. If you see any insulation damage use sleeving to repair it making sure the sleeving can't slip far enough to reexpose the damage (or use heatshrink which once shrunk won't be able to slip but this requires carefull application of a heat source such as a soldering iron to shrink the sleeving). Fit grommets on any entry holes that don't already have them and refit the sockets.

If its still tripping do the above to all the other electrical fittings supplied from the RCD side.

If its STILL tripping then i'd call an electrician who will have proper test equipment.

i did try resetting it with the main switch off but it still didnt reset? i will take the sockets off ive changed and check the cables.

if i plug a martindale in the sockets wont this tell me the type of fault on that socket?

MEM??

Turn the RCD FULLY OFF and then turn it back on.

The RCD on trips half way off during a fault.

If this is true, and you cut all power to the installation, there will have been no fault current flowing. If the RCD will not reset in these conditions it is faulty*

*with a few rare exceptions, like currents leaking from next door through water pipes and things

i was thinking maybe the rcd needs to be energised to be reset?????

Is it one of the types which, as JohnD says above, requires you to put the switch to the off position before it will reset? What does the info on the RCD say?

cant really remember the details on the rcd, ill be going back to the house on sunday ill have a closer look then. hopefully its just the rcd that is faulty.....

what info did you want off the rcd? it a 63amp, 30 mA MK rcd, the switch is already down as far as it goes, it just wont stay up when i switch it.... i put the circuit on without it going through the rcd and it didnt trip the mcb?????

I don't think you have worded that very clearly.

Most likely you have made a mistake during your rewiring. Re-examine it to see what you have done.

Turn off all the MCBs and see if the RCD will now reset, with the main switch turned back on.

If so, you have a Phase/Earth fault.
If not, you have a Neutral/Earth fault.

Do you want to try to fix this yourself, or will you get recommendations for a local electrician from your friends and neighbours?
