Split board. Lights on main switch side. 2x ring main and cooker on Rcd. All ok until something is plugged in in either ring. Switch 2 lights on in the house. Both trip the Rcd. Any ideas. Thanks
With no load the neutral and earth are same voltage, so 0/5 ohms = 0 current to earth, as the load increases then the voltage between neutral and earth increases so 0.1/5 ohms = 0.05 amps so RCD will trip.
Most appliances have switches which only switch the line, so step one unplug anything not in use. With a cooker turn off wall isolator. You may be lucky and find it, but likely it will need a meter of some sort, so likely cheaper to get an electrician to fix it than buying meter and learning how to use it.
