I am looking at doing some work to rectify the past owners poor gutting / fascia install and have been contemplating removing the asbestos cement soffits (Structurally sound but look shabby). I know the usual advice is to not disturb, but I have been mulling over a feasible and safe way to remove the soffits without damaging them or breaking them up.
My thoughts on how this could be done -
Idea one - would be to extract the nails from below (but getting behind the nail heads will likely cause damage).
Idea two - would be to remove the lower row of tiles above and then try and force the panel / rafter apart to loosen the nails (maybe block of wood and mallet / or a wrecking bar, then separate that way?
I am interested in whether anyone has a better solution for doing this without damaging the asbestos?
Extra info -
The house is single story so access (other than the gable end isn't an issue).
I have removed asbestos before so aware of the safety precautions.
I have had it tested and it is asbestos - Chrysotile.
I have spoken to a few places about removal and the quotes were comical.
Thanks in advance for the advice.
Regards
James
