I am re-routing the waste pipe from the basin in the bathroom and I want to remove the connection into the soil pipe and patch up the hole.

Both pipes are plastic. In the picture the soil pipe goes through a stone wall to the left and connects to the toilet on the right.

How do I go about the removal and repair?

You will need to replace the section of soil pipe if you remove the basin waste.

Is it worth the trouble?

You can't just remove the piece of pipe that's sticking upwards. Unless you're determined enough to replace a length of soil pipe like Bahco says, the best you can do is pull out what looks like a reducer that's stuck into it and put a blanking plug in. :( :( :(

The old basin waste is fairly long and ugly, plus I've also got the new waste pipe fitted already (at great expense), so I'm fairly committed to getting rid of this old one. I'll have a look at getting a blanking plug for the reduced part. It won't have to look pretty as I might end up boxing this in anyway.

It is definitely not worth replacing the soil pipe - it goes through a thick stone wall into cast iron.

Thanks for your advice.
