Does anyone know how to remove ceramic tiles with a reasonable chance that they will remain intact

When I refitted my kitchen in Nuneaton I didn't want to renew the tiles as it would have been a huge job so I moved some from covered up areas to newly exposed areas. I used various tools but one of the best things I tried was a set of feeler gauges, which can gradually be worked down behind a tile without bending it too much. A time consuming job but not impossible.
