Hi - I'm trying to remove varnish from a wooden fire surround. Most of it has come off well but there are some areas, such as round the bullseyes and in the underside 'battlement style' cut outs, where the varnish is ingrained. Any clever tips on how to clean tricky areas please? Thanks!

Are you using a varnish stripper or just a scraper, sandpaper and elbow grease!
If you are using a chemical stripper, try and make sure it does not dry out too quickly as this will stop it working. Some makes of stripper have cover pads to keep it wet while it is working, sometimes overnight. Saw some at a paint and dec show that was brushed on then dried to a sort of plastic film that was then peeled off with the paint or varnish stuck to it. Sounds like you got most of the job done though!
