Hi, thanks in advance for any replies. I'm renovating an old reproduction arm chair, and the stain / finish I would like is a very very dark brown, preferably matt or a very soft sheen.

Nothing high gloss. The chair has been varnished / stained before, any suggestions on a product which would give the desired result. I'm happy to sand the chair down, but there lots of intricate wood carvings on it, so something which would kind of cover all incase i miss the odd bit sanding. Im not sure on the type of wood its made from.....would a matt paint / spray do the job??? any help or comments are greatly appreciated.....thanks

ps,.
im not bothered about showing the wood grain, im just happy to get an all over colour result.

Try rubbing down with abrasive sponge pads or blocks or even wire wool in the intricate areas. A wipe over with some cellulose thinners or meths in those areas would ensure the top coat 'sticks'
You could try some satin polyuerathane or dead flat matt varnish (solvent-based not 'quick-drying' water-based varnish).
