Hi all,
I have a 1930s house with a concrete porch roof. It looks like it has been treated in a small area once already but the treatment has dried out / cracked / flaked and it now leaks through to the porch - luckily it's outside!

I'd like to repair it and am considering a couple of choices:-

1. Cover with a liquid rubber type material - any recommendations? Also how to finish off the edges where the concrete meets the brickwork. Is it sufficient to clean the old stuff back or does it have to be heat stripped away?

2. Replace with a felt roof (or other material). Again how to finish it off at the edges. Is it a case of one big piece then overlay with edge strips keyed into the mortar, or do you put the edge strips in first then one large sheet last.

I've included some pictures of the disaster area in my folder GWS Stuff. With usual aplomb I've managed to load them all upside down so please bear that in mind when viewing. Also, no prizes for suggesting that I leave the roof that way to prevent the rain getting through. you can see that any mortar from around the edges has been stripped aay by me as it was already loose. Note that the roof is flat ie no fall.

Any help or steerage would be really appreciated.

The concrete roof above my front door had spalled where water had got to the rebar. I found a place in essex that sell a concrete repair system. its called rockbond. You chisel out the damaged area, treat with a special primer, then mix the special concrete with water. It seems to have fibres in it, but it really does the trick. You don't apply with a trowel, you use gloved hands to work it into the damaged area. Then you apply a further compound on top to stop it drying out too quickly.

I was sceptical, but have to say I was pleasantly surprised how well it works and the porch roof now looks reasonably good again.
