Repairing and painting cornice

My front room has some original victorian cornice, however possibly due to the central heating it has cracked a little

Can anyone tell me what it is made of?

What should i use to fill it?

Whats the best way to paint in?

I used plaster of paris to repair mine, if you add lime it will slow the setting time, will give you more time to work on it.
If its just cracked polyfila should do the job ok.
Paint with what you like.
