I’m looking to board my loft and whilst clearing what’s currently there, I noticed some old and compacted insulation. Does this need replacing? Or will it do a job if I add additional insulation on top? It’s around 80mm in depth.
Thats pretty horrible stuff to deal with, so you may just want to add on top. If you do replace it make sure you gear up. I have some of that in my loft and its itchy as f**
Dust mask, long sleeves that you tuck into gloves (maybe cut a thumb hole in the end of the sleeve to help keep the sleeve down), and don't mop your brow or touch your face with your hands. Sweat band or bandana for your forehead
Wash exposed skin with cold water and try to rinse it before touching it
It's not that bad, but a little precaution makes it a lot better
If you're wanting to store stuff in the loft, consider installing rigid board installation over the top of the rafters instead, then put the floor boards on top of the rigid insulation. Use new wool for the edges as it's easier to deform and shape, but don't completely block up any eaves ventilation
