I have a floor standing Ideal RS80 boiler that is over 20 years old. It's now showing it's age like me at 65. My house is a very big 4 Bedroom with my wife and I only in it now the children have left.

What would you recommend that I ask the Corgi man to replace it with?

Keep the same but upgrade the controls. Almost NO boiler will last 20 years now.

A new boiler will need system cleansed (not just drained and refilled), system controls upgraded, TRVs fitted and (in England) almost certainly a condeming boiler installed. Benchmark logboog completeed and CORGI informed. Very possible a new gas line will be needed to the boiler.

So why take the hassel, stick with same boiler, put £16.00 a month aside for boiler repairs and upgrade controls. That is my advise to most of my clients. Keep the bean cans in the factory.

He meant "condensing" not "condemning" - freudian slip.
You'll need a new hot water cylinder too to comply with regs.
OTOH you might save say £200 pa on heating, having spent maybe £2000 ++.
There are a few, more ££, eg Viessmann, where you could take out annual breakdown cover for "as many years as you like" according to the salesman. "30?" I said, "No problem" he said.
