Hello
I have a 1960's bungalow with steel Crittall windows which I am thinking about replacing with modern plastic double glazed units. My concern about this is that windows on the gable end walls have a soldier course of bricks over the window but no lintel. It appears that the windows are acting as a structural element to support the brickwork above them. I have had estimates from window installers but they seem to think this is not a problem.
So my question is - are they correct. Can the windows be replaced without putting in some sort of support for the gable wall above them?
