My towel rail is electric only size 1200 x 500. The original seller tells me that the element was 600w (not sure if he is right) but the recommendations for this size of rail say 250w - 400w. Would there be a problem installing a 600w if the length would fit?

Provided the element physically fits into the rad, then no problem.

Higher wattage just means it will heat up quicker and use more electricity.

Many thanks. I have just removed the old element which had a thermostatic control attached to the end and it is stamped Rica 300w. The reason I am changing it is that I want to use a timer on the circuit so that it heats up for an hour or so morning and evening.

Currently, once the timer removes power from the electronic thermostat it is necessary to press a button on the thermostat before the element will heat up even if the timer restores power.

I am going to opt for a 400w standard element as it is a halfway house between 300w and 600w and within the guidelines recommended by Rica.
