Hi i have read the section on replacing a one way switch, but it didn't help me. The pull switch in my bathroom has broken. So i removed it and was left with a red, black and bare copper wire (See here: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jim.hatton/light switch.JPG ).

I bought a new switch and it has the following connections:
L1
L2

C
and a symbol that looks like an inverted T

Could somebody tell me which wires i fit to the connections, and which i connect together, etc?

Thanks.

the bare wire is earth and should have green/ yellow sleaving on it and be connected to the little brass terminal in the base of the switch (the bit you fix to the ceiling first)

the red and black go in c & L1 (doesnt matter which way round)

The earth has no sheathing on it.

When i took the switch down, i am sure that the two black wires were connected together with a plastic connection box.

You say the red and black go in c and L1, but there are two black and two red. So they both go in?

This is confusing me now!!

I thought i connected the incoming live to the C, the outgoing live to L1 and pass the neutral and earth through the switch using plastic connectors?

my apologies, as your picture is so big i only saw the first cable (didn't scroll across the picture)

it should be

Two blacks together, red in C red in L1 the two earth wires should have sleaving put on them for saftey sake

the two blacks should be joined as should the two earths (but that is to each other not all together

red L1 ) switch
red C ) switch

Black - black (in connector block)

Earth - Earth (join on earth teminal on switch base)

Hi thanks for the reply. I just have one more question. I am still confused about the arth wire. you say it should be joined at the earth teminal on switch base. I am not sure what this is. Here is a picture of my switch:

Is it the terminal with the inverted T symbol? Other than that, there are no other terminals?

The inverted "T" with pyramid lines above is, as you say, your earth. Connect up and see your bod in the bath !!!!!!
As Breezer said sheath your bare copper (earth) wire to save any dangerous/fatal mistakes. Best of luck.

to clarify what Scoby_Beasley said
EarthSymbolCopy.JPG
is an earth symbol, and should only be used for that purpose

where as
DoubleInsCopy.JPG
is double insulated which means it requires and has no earth
