Rising Damp either side of fireplace

1930's semi with external flue, have rising damp patches either side of fireplace in an arc shape about 1m high and extending out at floor level to about 1/2 metre. no other damp in the room, unused coal fire, chimney does not have a cowl. Any ideas?

Is the fireplace blocked up at the bottom? If it is, it has no ventilation and consequently no way of getting rid of the moisture.
 
Checked the fireplace and someone has placed a piece of cardboard in the flue I assume to stop cr*p from falling into the hearth. I will remove and monitor, cheers oilman
