Just discovered this site, hope someone can answer my question.

I have bought a shower tray to install. It looks like the only way I can route the 40mm waste is to drill through a couple of floor joists.

I realise that this isn't advisable. Can I route the pipe through the joists if I can reinforce the joists with steel plates? Are steel plates to be bolted to either side of the joist where I cut it (to sandwich it) available?

Many thanks.

This isn't practical in most UK properties.

You will inevitably either have to raise the tray or find an alternative route for the discharge. Welcome to our world. When most of the trade quote for shower installations, the waste route is No1 priority to watch out for.

Failing that you could fit a macerator pump (eg: Saniflo product) which uses a smaller discharge pipe, but that is not a route I would advocate.
