runing waste pipe for kitchen sink behind units

Most units have a space behind for service pipes usually anything from 2 to 4 inches.
The problem comes when you have an appliance that goes right back to the wall in the run as you may not have enough space there.
Though if you happen to be using them, I have a vauge feeling that I have read somewhere that Ikea ones are a bit tight for space.
