Trouble looming...
...A walkout by 650 drivers would again strand motorists in many parts of the country without fuel...

...The drivers, who supply the vast majority of Shell forecourts, are calling for a pay rise of 13 per cent. The company, Hoyer UK, has offered 6 per cent...

...Hoyer says its 6 per cent offer would see the average driver's £36,000 salary rise to £38,500. The union is calling for a minimum wage for all drivers of £36,000...

...One source from the union Unite, which represents the drivers, said its members had the capacity to seriously disrupt supply of petrol. There is also the threat of secondary picketing which means other petrol stations could be affected. The source said: "This will bring petrol forecourts to a halt and picket lines will not be crossed."...

...Earlier this year Shell reported annual profits of £13.9 billion, a record for a UK-listed company. Much of the rise has been attributed to increased oil prices...

Their working for a company that last year made billions and next year will make even more billions. Good luck to the tanker drivers.

Nuts to that, there on good money as it is, and they've been offered six percent, which is a lot more than most are getting now. They are just seeing the profit the oil company is making and want their share. But that's our money, and the oil companies should have their profits capped by government to help keep prices down a bit. That will only happen when we get an honest government though, as in never.

The so-called 'professions' earn about 100K more than that (GPs, Dentists, Lawyers, SEs, accountants) so why shouldn't they get a pay rise? Bus drivers should be on the same money too. And teachers and nurses.

I think you'll find that the professions have a tad more liability (including personal) attaching to their jobs than a truckie. If they want more money, they should go and get another job some place else that will pay it. If they're doing the same job in the same way in the same place, why should they get more money, just because they're comparing themselves with someone else?

Even the trough feeders in Parliament are at it, saying they should be paid the same as some management level - so they should go and do that instead, go without the tax-free perks and copper-bottomed pensions that they already get that no one else does.

BTW you didn't include surveyors in the list of professions - you'll have Woody after you :)

So?

Merchant bankers earn much, much more than that. Doesn't mean to say that I should be earning £Ms as well, though.

Neither should you earn more than a teacher or social worker or prison officer. You are overpaid. More so than the truck driver.

With regard to your first sentence, do you mean me personally, or "you" in general?

As for second and third, how so, exactly?

Well either really. There should be a scale of pay throughout society reflecting the time and investment to attain the qualifications and the usefulness to society.
I don't believe a GP is worth 5 times that of a teacher or nurse. Twice maybe to reflect the years of training (even though they are usually pretty thick). No worker is worth more than 5 times another.
