I'm being told to fit a shower at home,

being a gas chap and not a plumber i've never fitted a shower base,

it's being installed on a wood floor,is tile adhesive the best thing to stick it

down? or is there a trick of the trade.

Generally I use a 3/4" WBP plywood base either on top of or instead of the floorboards, glued and screwed down for stability. Remember, if it moves more than about 0.5mm when you stand in it, it won'd seal properly to the wall or tiles. On that subject always leave about 3mm gap to the bottom tiles so the silicone sealant can absorb a little movement.
Getting the waste trap on can be a bit of a bitch unless you have access under the base.
Stick it down with silicone sealant if the base is level, else use a 1/2" thick dry mortar mix over the whole base area.

meldrew's_mate advice is excellent, but, to be blunt, if you're a "gas chap" then you must be familar with following the MIs - installing a shower tray is no different.

The manufacturer is likely to recommend a sand/cement base. Some people use silicone instead, but in either case the platform/floor must be absolutely solid. On no account should you use flexible floor tile adhesive!
