Hi,

I am installing a patio on a very gentle slope

Do i need to dig deeper or are the following depths ok? I've read 150mm depth but feel it's overkill for a patio are?

The slabs are 45mm thick
30mm sharp sand
55mm MOT hardcore

To set out and dig to the correct depth during the initial excavation, i've set a string line at the starting and finishing height (gentle slope). I've dug down 130mm from the string line.

When compacting down the hardcore, is it best to put a stake in each corner with lines corresponding with the depth requires, and then just level it off there once again using string lines between the batons in the corners?

Area is an odd shape, its like a 3.5 x 2.5 m square with a triangle in the corner on top of the square

cheers

55mm is a bit on the stingy side, i'd aim for 100mm at least, and the way you suggest for the depth is ok, just measure down from top of line and allow for compaction.
