I want to soundproof a room, where my wife can get some peace and quiet from our son, I was thinking of cork tiles, does anyone know whether these absorb much sound?, any alternative suggestions?, we are on a bit of a limited budget.
Any replies appreciated.

i think its to do with the "reflectiveness" of the surface so a cork tile is flat so no

this may sound daft but have you tried egg trays like

put them on the ceiling and walls, it may sound daft but it does work, you can also paint them first

Why not make a box big enough to put your son in and soundproof that. Much cheaper way of doing it. Don't forget the air holes mind

Many questions to be answered here. Firstly, how old is your son? Screaming baby or screaming teenager? Is he in an upstairs or downstirs room? and I agree with the last point, don't soundproof to get away from your son, soundproof him into his room, whose house is it anyway?

You may need gyproc/wallboard/plasterboard to reinforce the walls (very cheap) Also seal around all doors with some heavy draught excluder type stuff, sound will escape around doors if there are any gaps around them so make sure there are none whatsoever.

Oh yeh, forget eggboxes, they will do nothing to stop sound travel
