Soundproofing a wall

Hi, I hope this is in the right place but I just wondered if anyone could advise me on soundproofing a joining wall.
We live in a semi, neighbours arent that noisy but the dog can be a problem, ours as well as theirs
Ive read that you can add more plasterboard with a gap between but have also seen more modern materials that apparantly stick to the wall. Anyone used anything like this, who did it for you as we are struggling to find companies that do it and if done yourself what was the finish like as we have perfect plastered walls at the moment and Id like the same finish if possible.
We dont want to lose much room, hence looking at the thin modern materials and we have a fireplace in the middle of the wall with an electric fire that somehow receeds about 8 inches into the wall??? Theres no chimney so god knows how it isnt protruding into next doors living room. It would be nice not to have to remove this if at all possible.
We have had one company in for a quote, the wanted £3k but we had to replace the fire, surround, get a plumber in as theres a radiator on the wall too and they werent sure about removing the fire which put me off a bit.
Any advice for an easy inexpensive fix would be much appreciated.

This could be the weakest link in the chain, could be just a layer of plasterboard separating you from the other side. They may have a chimney breast that's housing your heater. Sorting this could reduce the problem considerably.

How thick is the wall, what is it's current construction?

A standard cheapie (not entirely cheap) fix would be to batten out and fix resilient channel to the wall, with dense mineral wool insulation, and double plasterboard and skim. You may still have problems with sound if there are any pockets or holes that the floor joists sit in.

Even after doing this, you will still hear each others dogs, although it will help reduce noise quite a bit.

Specialist soundproofing products give minimal performance for maximum cost, compared to the technique that I have described.
