Was about to replace a stair switch that has 2 way (top stairs/bottom stairs) function and found that the red Live from the 3 core strap and the black neutral from the 2 core switch from junction box cable were not connected into the switch but to each other via a plastic connector.

looking in the book i see that it suggests-
red from strapping cable goes to common, yellow to L1 and Blue to L2.
The 2 core switch cable from the junction box would then have it's red going into L1 and the black going into L2.

If i replace the socket should i wire it up as suggested in the book or is there a reason that it was done the way it was originally with the plastic connector and should i retain this instead.

re-connect it the way it was. at least itll work

I would assume from your description that the red from the 2-core goes to the switch common and the yellow/blue from the 3-core are connected to L1/L2, yes?

If you go to the other switch where there's just the 3-core you should then find red on common, yellow/blue on L1/L2.

Nothing wrong with that arrangement at all -- In fact it's the classic traditional wiring method. Not sure which book you're referring to, but the method there is just the other way of wiring the switches, equally acceptable. Does this book not describe the first way as well?

no - book seems to have not one single picture of those mini plastic connectors which is a pain as they are all over the place in my house it seems. But as long as it's ok to have those wires not connected into the switch but just to themselves then i'll do the same with the new switch.

Thanks
