An interesting addition to this, a new bypass was constructed recently near me and just before completion Natural England insisted on "Bat Bridges" across the highway at a cost to the taxpayers of £300,000. Strange, I thought bats could fly.

I think they fly along 'highways' based on tree positions, so it may be related to that.
