Stoves range oven - flames behind control panel!

Hi all, I've just turned our oven on and after a couple of minutes the control panel sparked and I could see flames behind the clock and the dial next to it (the oven control) which I managed to blow out. Any ideas what's happened and what I need to do to fix it? The rest of the oven (grill etc) appear to be working fine though I've turned it off for now. If I turn it on at the mains the control panel makes a humming noise.
