Strange copper pipe size

Had a strange one last week- had to replace a section of 15mm copper pipe to a garden tap which had burst and started leaking but couldn't find any fitting that would go over the pipe. As far as I coiuld see, the pipe was not distorted in any way. Tried a compression as I thought the pipe could be imperial but still didn't work. Eventually I got around it by making the joint furthet back along the pipe - the other side of an elbow fitting, the fitting slipped on with no problem. Has anyone had this problem before?

I've had this with 22mm pipe where nothing would fit, and no not 3/4 either.
Talking to an old hand, he told me their was a shortage in the 70s and their were some odd size pipes around that were imported.

I just used a socket former and joined from there
