hi, wonder if anyone can help,

i have a bathroom at the moment that has a fan connected through the light so when i turn on the light it turns on the fan. i want to wire a switch into this so i can turn on the fan on or off depending on what i want. As it stands i will have a leg coming from the light switch to the light, then the leg from the light to the fan which i will take out and take it to the new switch instead. from this switch ill then wire to the fan. is this correct? as the fan has a timer on it it will need a constant live but how do i do this. plus what type of switch shall i get as i would like a pull cord one.

any help would be great
