I am in the process of removing all the back fill that was behind the old open fire in order to make an opening for a multi fuel stove with a back boiler 11kW.
The opening is 5 feet by 5 feet by nearly 3 foot deep. It would have had an cast iron kitchen range originally. There is substantial lintel above. It has left a very rough uneven and heavily caked sooty back wall. So I have decided to build a block wall at the rear as there is more than an adequate amount of room. I would like any advice as to would thermalite blocks rendered with cement lime etc. be O.K. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated. Many thanks.

Hi,
Many thanks for your reply, I had a look at your fireplace opening, it looks very similar to what mine should look like when finished. There are 8" wide jams either side supporting the lintel. The height is 5 foot by 5 foot wide. Very impressed at your result. You are right about Stovax, I do need at least a 11kW multi fuel stove but may go up to 14kW so the other stove I as looking at was Hunter 8 and Hunter 14. Many thanks, for the information.
