testing and adjusting boilers

great site. i have two questions regarding boiler repairs and would greatly appreciate any input
1) if a faulty electrode is suspected how do you test the electodes integrity?
2)how do you alter gas rates for boilers where there is no burner pressure points? someone has said adjust the pontimeters on pcbs but as far as i know they are factory set and shouldnt be touched.
